PROS: The SportWagon Aero has a very large load area and its sleek styling manages to conceal its bulk. The cabin is both comfortable and well equipped. The turbocharged engine has adequate strength and is smooth at cruising speeds.
CONS: The SportWagon certainly doesn’t feel and look up to the quality that a premium car should. The ride is a little firm, particularly at lower speeds and the gearbox is rather notchy.
This Saab 95 SportWagon’s ride is suitably refined when cruising on motorways and capable on a winding country road, but push too hard and the handling becomes overwhelmed by the car’s size and weight. The steering feels precise though.
There’s plenty of adjustment in the driver’s seat and the steering wheel adjusts, so most drivers should be able to find a decent position easily. The dashboard is laid out reasonably well with easy to read instruments but for the most part it looks and feels way behind the dashes of its rivals.
The 2.0 litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces maximum figures of 187 bhp at 4000 rpm and 295 lb-ft at 1750 rpm. A 0-62 mph time of 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 134 mph are respectable figures.
The Saab 95 SportWagon Aero 2.0 TTiD XWD 5dr is a smart and stylish looking car from the distinctive Saab grill to the curvaceously sculpted rear with its svelte wraparound tailgate window.
Inside you get keyless start, a CD player, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, electric windows, electric door mirrors, Satnav, cruise control, rear parking sensors, leather seats and dual-zone climate control as standard. It also comes with alloy wheels, an alarm and immobiliser and integrated front fog lights.
Metallic paint is a £540 option.
This Saab 95 comes with many safety features including six airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and stability control.
Saab’s fair reasonably well in the reliability stakes but they aren’t without their problems. This car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.
The SportWagon has loads of space, both in the front of the cabin and the rear as well as the boot, which offers 527 litres of space with the seats in place or a massive 1600 litres with them folded. Unlike many of its rivals, the sidewalls are completely flat and the rear wheel arches don’t intrude into the space either so loading large items is a breeze. There are numerous compartments in the sidewalls too for handy stowage of smaller items.
At £34,485, the Saab 95 SportWagon Aero 2.0 TTiD XWD 5dr carries a premium price tag.
A combined cycle of 42.8 mpg is a respectable figure for a car of this size, with a CO2 emissions figure of 174 g/km, and consequently the taxes and running costs will be manageable.
It has a comfortable cabin with a high level of equipment and a cavernous luggage space. It drives well and its ride quality is generally good, although it lacks a touch of panache. It feels sturdy and of good quality, but it’s not the most appealing premium estate in its class and it’ll attract fairly low resale values.
