The Infiniti G series is one which is looking to compete with the top end of Mercedes and BMW saloons, and that the performance figures are so impressive is a real sign of this competitiveness. The cabin is luxurious and the handling is very good, with the only complaint being a firm ride that may not be to the taste of the passengers in the car.

PROS:  The GT trim has all of the luxury available in the G series with a range of equipment included, and the vehicle also benefits from four wheel drive and has an efficient semi automatic gearbox.

CONS:  The high running costs and eye watering purchase price will be an issue for many buyers, and the four wheel drive will really not be necessary for the majority of drivers in this type of car.

Behind the Wheel

One of the most noticeable aspects of this car is the semi automatic gearbox which is controlled from the controls on the steering wheel, which is a particularly effective and quick shifting option. The balance of the car is wonderful and there is very little body roll, and the G37 deals with even winding country roads with relative ease. The driving position is good, and the adjustable seats mean that finding a comfortable position is straightforward. The only quibble is the small windscreen which can slightly restrict the view at times.

The 3.7 litre engine is pacy and responds well to the accelerator, and can sprint from 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds, which is exceptionally quick. When this is combined with a top speed of 149mph, this car is certainly competing with the top executive saloons currently on the market.

Looks & Equipment

The Infiniti G series isn't too adventurous in terms of the design, and the car shows more than a nod to the design ethos of some of the Mercedes executive saloons. A narrow grille and a small air intake beneath are combined with a sleek bonnet that blends nicely into the rest of the car. The rear end is a little bit square, but this is really only a minor issue, and one that goes with the necessities of many saloon cars.

Attractive alloy wheels are only the start of the features that are included with this G37, and luxuries such as cruise control, powered heated seats and an electric adjustment system for the steering wheel make this car a pleasure. Bluetooth connectivity is included as standard, and the stereo is supplied with a multi CD player.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

In terms of the space to be found within the G37, there is certainly no doubt that the front seats are particularly spacious, but the space in the rear will be a little constrictive for tall people. The boot space is reasonable for a car in this class, but the reality is that the G37 is aiming towards those looking for style and exclusivity over practicality.

Although there are no Euro NCAP test results available for the G37, it does come supplied with six airbags, and plenty of driving aids that will help to keep the driver on the road and firmly in control of this powerful and quick vehicle. Because Infiniti is quite a new brand it is difficult to determine long term reliability, but the three year warranty should certainly give people peace of mind that any problems would be quickly resolved.

Value for Money

The market for the Infiniti G37 GT will be quite limited, and this will largely be because of the list price of £36,579. This puts it in the same range as the top saloons from Mercedes and BMW, and this is only a small section of the cars that are sold every year.

The running costs are frankly disappointing, with the fuel performance of an average 25.7mpg clearly suffering from the excellent acceleration and speed figures available from the engine. The insurance group is also very high, and depreciation is a problem, so this is not a car for those that are particularly worried about the financial side of the vehicle. It is however supplied with a three year warranty and roadside breakdown cover, which should help to cushion the blow a little bit.
