PROS: This hatchback has a spacious and attractive interior, and the car is also a versatile one which is very safe to drive.
CONS: The drive isn’t particularly inspiring, and although the interior does look quite nice it doesn’t perform quite as well as it looks.
There is no doubt that the ix20 is comfortable enough to drive, and the car delivers plenty of grip, there is a tendency for the car to lean quite a lot when driving through corners. The handling itself is also a little inert and doesn’t really give much feedback to the driver. In terms of the driving position it is slightly more elevated than that of a hatchback, but it really could do with having a little more flexibility in terms of seat and steering wheel adjustment.
The engine delivers some rather uninspiring figures in terms of speed and acceleration, and going from 0-62mph in 12.2 seconds is not a particularly impressive time. The top speed of 114mph is reasonable, but anyone getting anywhere near that speed will find that the noise from the engine and the wind noise would make for quite an uncomfortable experience.
It is clear to see that the heritage of the ix20 comes from the i20 which has been expanded towards the rear, but in terms of the looks of the car that is no bad thing. Hyundai do generally take a more conservative design approach with their vehicles, sticking to the conventional within the class, and in this car it works quite well. The front end certainly looks like a hatchback, while the body merges seamlessly into a back end that is much more like an MPV.
The alloy wheels that come as standard with the vehicle certainly helps to improve the overall look of the car, and the air conditioning and electric heated mirrors are also welcome additions to the specification. Bluetooth connectivity is also included, but those who are looking to add in a few additional luxuries will find that there are very few additional options available for the ix20.
In terms of the practicality of the ix20, the cabin can comfortably accommodate four people, and has the seats to accommodate five at a squeeze. The boot is slightly more spacious than the average hatchback, and the flexible seating means there are options for carrying larger items than can fit in the boot. Hyundai are known for making reliable cars, which is why they are able to offer such a comprehensive warranty package.
The ix20 was awarded five stars in the Euro NCAP tests carried out, and it is equipped with plenty of safety equipment. The usual driver’s aids are all in place to help ensure that the car remains stable on the road and stays out of accidents, but if there is a collision there are six airbags included as standard which will cushion the blow.
Probably the main sticking point for many buyers that are considering the ix20 is the price, and with a list price of £14,655 for this model it is taking it into the range of some rather impressive cars. With a mid range i20 retailing at nearly three thousand pounds less than this price, and only a marginally larger amount of space and flexibility, the ix20 will only appeal to a limited range of people.
The ix20 is quite reasonable to run, and the fuel performance delivered by the 1.6 engine is 43.6mpg, which is solid if unspectacular. The insurance group is particularly low, and the warranty package is for five years and is accompanied by a five year RAC roadside breakdown assistance policy, which is leading the class. Depreciation can also be a problem with these cars, with a significant drop in the resale prices when it becomes time to trade up.

The ix20 is Hyundai's attempt at a small people carrier. It's not a bad effort by any means but this top-of-the-range model is a little pricey - the cheaper models make more financial sense.
