PROS: The ix20 is cheap, practical and well equipped.
CONS: It's no fun to drive and some of the interior plastics look and feel very cheap indeed.
The Hyundai ix20's 1.4-litre petrol engine develops 89bhp and 101lb-ft of torque which translates into a 0-62mph time of 12.9 seconds and a top speed of 104mph. This is hardly earth-shattering performance but the ix20 feels nippy enough around town.
By contrast, the little Hyundai is absolutely no fun to drive. There is plenty of body roll through the bends and the steering is limp and lifeless. The ride, however, is comfortable over most road surfaces.
The 1.4-litre engine is reasonably refined although a significant amount of wind and road noise is present in the cabin at higher speeds.
The ix20 features Hyundai's ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. This design has flowing lines instead of the boxy looks that Hyundai have been associated with in the past.
The interior looks very stylish although some of the interior plastics are lacking in the quality department. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, a cool-box in the glove compartment, electric front windows, power steering and a CD player with MP3 and USB connectivity. Metallic paint can be specified for £425.
The ix20 should be very safe, having scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. Front, side and curtain airbags are all included as standard, along with ABS, stability control and whiplash-reducing headrests.
There is plenty of cabin space in the ix20 and the boot is also massive, offering an impressive 440-litres of space with the rear seats up and a van-like 1486-litres with the rear seats folded flat.
Hyundais are generally very reliable cars and the ix20 is supplied as standard with a five year unlimited mileage warranty in case anything does go wrong.
The ix20 1.4 Classic Blue Drive is priced at £12,195 which represents excellent value for money. Moreover, the ix20 should also be cost-effective in the long run as resale values are predicted to be very strong.
The ix20 should also be cheap to run, returning 50.4mpg on the combined cycle and emitting just 130g/km of CO2 which means it falls under VED band D. Group 7 insurance should also be very cheap indeed.
The ix20 1.4 Classic Blue Drive is by no means the best car in its class, but it offers a good amount of equipment and practicality for the money. As a spacious, small, practical car, it does it jo...

The ix20 is Hyundai's attempt at a small people carrier. It's not a bad effort by any means but this top-of-the-range model is a little pricey - the cheaper models make more financial sense.
