Toyota has revealed the final model in the Peugeot - Citroen - Toyota city car trilogy, the new Aygo, at the Geneva Motor Show.
Unlike the new C1 and 108 with which the Aygo shares its underpinnings, the new Toyota has quite an aggressive front end design. The distinctive X-shaped pattern on the front of the Aygo is designed to represent “the concept of a soft object breaking through the hard shell of the design,” and influences all of the car’s major design features.
The roof has also been lowered and the front header moved forwards, which Toyota claims gives the car a “more balanced posture.” The rear end, meanwhile, has been given the same design treatment as the front, with the hexagonal tailgate and rear bumper creating an angular look.
The Peugeot 108 will share its platform with the Aygo...
The angular theme continues on the inside where the trapezoidal centre console, air vents and door trims combine to create a distinctive look.
Under the bonnet the Aygo is fitted with a tweaked version of Toyota’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder powerplant which now has an improved combustion chamber design and a higher compression ratio. Power now stands at 68bhp and torque at 70lb-ft.
... as will the new Citroen C1.
The Aygo will be offered with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a new x-shift automated manual, which can be used in fully automatic mode or by selecting gears manually via paddle shifts.
Full details of the UK Aygo model range will be announced nearer to the car’s on-sale date this summer.
