‘If you are looking for an immaculate, well maintained example of a Mercedes e320 CDI... you have come to the wrong place’ reads the opening line of a rather unorthodox eBay sales pitch from a West Sussex couple.
Contrary to popular approach, Murdo Guy and Camilla Banks decided that honesty was the best policy when it came to listing their beloved saloon – Miss Banks even posed for several pictures with the model in a tongue-in-cheek photo shoot.
The description continues in similar fashion: ‘As you can see from the photos this car has seen things... things it cannot forget. I have owned this car for 3 years, and up to then it had been lovingly cared for and maintained. Since owning the vehicle, it has been thrashed, raced, rallied, and the interior has been smashed up in a domestic, not to mention the time my wife booted the wing because I suggested she eat a salad or two (please refer to photo of foot next to dent for reference). The car was lovingly cleaned in preparation for the 2012 summer Olympics, and may be in need of another one now.’
It proved to be a formidable sales technique, capturing the imagination of budding eBayers up and down the country; bidding activity soared and soon after there was a £150,000 price tag on the rusty E-Class, before the listing was taken down by the online auction site.
However, the car has now been relisted and according to the description has been ‘revised it so it won't get taken down again.’
Despite the humorous nature of the advert the couple have called for serious bids only and stated that refunds are not available.
The bidding currently stands at £155,300.
