In the 'posh hatchback' segment, the Volvo V40 is a left-field choice when you compare it to its major rivals, the Audi A3, the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes A-Class. However, we were so impressed with the V40's all-round competence, class and charm that it's the Swede that takes home the gong for the 'Best Medium Family Car'.
On the outside, the V40 is effortlessly classy and blessed with feelings of both chunkiness and sportiness. To our eyes it's the best-looking car in its class and it's the same story inside. The interior feels solid and well-made and there are premium-touch plastics as far as the eye can see. Volvo's signature 'floating dashboard' also adds to the stylish, quality feel.

Special praise must also be reserved for the D2 diesel engine, which manages to be both a smooth and responsive performer while delivering some astonishing economy and emissions figures. 94g/km of CO2 means free road tax and a claimed 78mpg means that trips to the pumps will be few and far between.
What stands out most about the V40 though is its range of innovative new safety features. The world's first pedestrian airbag, a blind-spot monitoring system and City Safety automatic braking technology (which brakes and, at low speeds, stops you if it detects an imminent crash) all go towards making the V40 the safest car in its class.
