The Jetta saloon is highly practical, with loads of space for passengers and in the boot. The running costs are ultra low thanks to the Bluemotion system and the performance is fairly good too, although some drivers may need more excitement behind the wheel. Also, the equipment list leaves a little to be desired, and many luxuries will need to be purchased as cost extras.

PROS:  The Bluemotion technology means low running costs, which makes this car great value for money as well as it being a practical saloon with loads of space on offer.

CONS:  The S trim is the most basic level and some drivers may feel they need more equipment and luxuries as standard.

Behind the Wheel

The top speed of the saloon is 118 mph. It takes 11.7 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph. The car’s power output is 104 bhp and has torque figures of 185 lb-ft at 1500-2500 rpm.

The driving experience delivered by the Jetta is a competent one, with smooth and responsive steering as well as efficient handling. The Jetta is not particularly fun to drive, but offers a refined ride and is an accomplished motorway cruiser, with a cabin which does an excellent job of keeping noise to a minimum.

The steering wheel and driver's seat are both very adjustable, allowing for maximum comfort.

Looks & Equipment

The S trim is the most basic version, but still comes with the essentials and has plenty of optional extras.

The in-car entertainment is limited to a CD player. However, MP3 connectivity is available for £95. Bluetooth is available for £625. Satellite navigation is not standard but can be fitted for £795.

Leather seating and cruise control are not available. Rear parking sensors cost £440. Air conditioning is fitted and climate control can be bought for £780. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard.

Alloy wheels are not a standard component and have to be purchased for £410 while metallic paint costs £465.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

This car is very practical. It seats five occupants and has four-door access, which is very convenient for family car. The boot space is also generous as when the rear seats are upright there is 510 litres on offer.

In terms of reliability, this car is covered under warranty for three years and up to 60,000 miles.

An alarm is fitted as standard with this model, alongside central locking, an immobiliser and driver, passenger and front side airbags.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Jetta S 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Technology 4dr can be bought for £18,410. The main attraction is the fuel economy, but the Jetta is also a practical car with a spacious cabin. The S trim is the most basic, so drivers who like a few more luxuries might upgrade to the SE.

The car produces 109 g/km of CO2 emissions and has a combined average of 67.3 mpg, which is excellent efficiency. Overall it represents great value for money.
