Volkswagen Jetta Overview

The Volkswagen Jetta is essentially the same as a Golf, only with a boot, it is therefore no surprise that the Jetta boasts an excellent build quality and good levels of refinement.

The current Jetta is the sixth generation of Jetta which is larger and cheaper than the previous model putting it in the same league as the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic in an attempt to enter a wider market. It is also the first Jetta not to share any body panels with the Golf. Its engine range consists of the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI (122 or 160 PS), 2.0 TSI, 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI engines, there is also a Jetta R version expected.

Background

The production of the VW Jetta began production in 1979 with the first generation model lasting until 1983. It was then replaced by the second generation model which was produced until 1993. The third generation model was renamed as ‘Vento’  and was the first Jetta to use the newly available 1.9 litre Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine.

The fourth generation Jetta arrived in 1999 and shared many styling features with the Passat which had debuted shortly before the Jetta. It was praised for its handling and comfy ride. There was also an estate version of the Fourth generation Jetta produced.

The fifth generation Jetta saw the production lines in 2005 and reflected a new styling direction for the Volkswagen Brand, the most notable example of this new styling was the chrome grille it featured. It also contained a completely redesigned electrical system. The fifth generation Jetta was then replaced by the current sixth generation Jetta in 2010.

Overview

The Jetta is nice to drive, elegant and very spacious. It also has broken away from its previous image of being a Golf with a boot welded onto it.
