The Mazda MX-5 has been synonymous with cheap open-top driving for many years, and this latest version is one which balances a great driving experience with the practicality of a folding roof. However, the refinement isn't as good as it could be, and this top-of-the-range model is arguably too expensive for what it is.

PROS:  The MX-5 is a very good car that offers a great driving experience and a folding roof which is very good, and the cost of owning the car is really quite competitive.

CONS:  This top end version of the MX-5 does come with a fairly high list price and there is quite a lot of engine noise.

Behind the Wheel

There is no doubt that one of the main reasons that people will be interested in the MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0i Sport Tech PowerShift, is that it has an excellent reputation for a fun driving experience and, with the car's lightness and superb rear-wheel-drive balance, this is well deserved. The steering is very accurate and responds quickly giving the handling an intuitive feel, but the firm suspension of the Sport version may not be to everyone's tastes.

Drivers are offered plenty of options in terms of seat and wheel adjustment. The low driving position offers good visibility, but with the folding roof in place visibility through the small rear window is limited.

The performance from the 2.0 litre engine is particularly good because the MX-5 is such a light car, and the acceleration from 0-62mph of 8.9 seconds is particularly impressive. The top speed of 121mph may not be as quick as more powerful sports cars, but the MX-5 is more about fun than outright power and performance.

Looks & Equipment

The MX-5 has been a design classic for many years, and the latest incarnation of the car is more of an evolution than a revolution. The front grille is smaller than on many more modern cars, but the headlight clusters are aerodynamically designed to fit with the bonnet, which is pleasantly curved. The back of the car is tidy and small, and whether the roof is up or down it still looks good.

The MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0i Sport Tech PowerShift comes with alloy wheels and leather seats, which are a very desirable accessory. Bluetooth connectivity is a nice addition, as is the high quality Bose CD stereo. In terms of the driving experience, heated seats make it a little more practical to use in the winter, and cruise control and climate control help to make the car a lot more pleasant to use and to drive.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

People who are buying a two-seater sports car will expect that the car isn't going to be particularly practical, and the folding roof adds to the problem as the boot space is quite limited. However, the MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0i Sport Tech PowerShift does come with driver, passenger and side airbags that will help to keep the occupants safe should there be an accident, and the driver aids should help the driver to avoid an accident in the first place.

Mazda have an excellent reputation for building cars that are reliable, and the MX-5's reliability is one of the reasons that it has been such a popular car over the years.

Value for Money

With a list price of £23,225 there is no doubt that this top of the range version is a lot of money to spend on an MX-5, but it does have the best version of the engine and also has some very nice equipment.

In terms of the running costs, the MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0i Sport Tech PowerShift's fuel economy is acceptable, delivering an average 35.3mpg. This is the thirstiest MX-5 on sale but 35mpg is still respectable for a sports car. The insurance is a reasonable group 26, and the desirability of the car means that it is likely to hold its value well. The MX-5 is sold with a three year warranty and also has a three year roadside breakdown assistance policy.
