The MX-5 is such a polished performer, that it is difficult to choose the best feature. Fabulous handling, sleek styling, a well equipped interior and a very simple roof make drop-top driving simple and fun. On top of that it is practical and reliable but unfortunately the power fails to live up to its appearances and its stylish design compromises boot space.

PROS:  This car doesn’t just look great but it is also great to drive. It has strong residual values and the roof mechanism is incredibly simple.

CONS:  The interior is dull and the boot is very small.

Behind the Wheel

The MX-5 isn't the fastest car out there but this model is the quickest in the range. The 2.0 petrol engine develops 158bhp and 138lb-ft of torque which translates to a top speed of 135 mph and 0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds.

The MX-5 has its engine in the front, driving the rear wheels in a classic sports car set up. This results in great balance, with the car offering smooth handling on the road. You have to keep the engine revs high whilst driving on B roads but gear changes are light and precise and a lack of lean whilst taking corners makes for an involving drive. This Roadster Coupe model has a folding hard top but the extra weight of this doesn't ruin the drive and whichever model you choose, the MX-5 has great dynamics.

Looks & Equipment

This is the third generation of the MX-5 so it is now easily recognisable. The design of the MX-5 is attractive, sleek and unfussy and this makes it a popular choice.

All the dials and controls are well laid out and built whilst the MX-5’s roof is easy to raise and is stored with ease, offering practicality and style.

Equipment wise you get a five-speed manual gearbox, remote central locking, alloy wheels and electric windows are standard, with an advanced stereo and electric mirrors also included.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Despite this being a two seater convertible it is actually quite practical, mainly thanks to the roof arrangement and mechanism which is easy to operate. Unfortunately, the boot still lacks depth and can hold just 150 litres. The boot shape makes it easier to store cargo than expected but the size is still restrictive.

For the two occupants of the car, there is a lot of room on offer in the cabin making long journeys comfortable - even for taller passengers or drivers. The seats offer high levels of support and plenty of adjustment so a comfortable position should be easy to find. The steering wheel also adjusts to give drivers additional comfort.

Mazda builds some of the most reliable cars on the market and looking at the quality of build and finish, MX-5 owners should have little to worry about.

For a small, two seater convertible, you get a good amount of safety kit for your money. This includes an electronic stability programme (ESP), ABS, traction control, and front and side airbags all as standard.

Value for Money

Priced at £18,785, you get a lot of car for your money and it is impossible to have more fun for less money. Resale values should also be very strong.

As expected, running costs are not the lowest around but they are still fairly good for a car of this class. Fuel efficiency of 37.2 mpg means refuelling shouldn't be too costly whilst carbon emissions of 177g/km put the car into tax band I, with VED costing £210 a year. Insurance premiums fall under bracket 26 which is fairly mid-range and means drivers will face moderate costs to keep this car on the road.
