CarSite Verdict:  4.5/5
This entry level Mazda Roadster Coupé offers the looks and some of the feel of a sports car on a much smaller budget. Stripped down to the bone to keep the price down, you get very little refinement and not much power, but it is a fun car for the price, with good acceleration and top speed, which are easily good enough for most drivers.

PROS:  The Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupé 1.8i SE is more spacious inside than previous versions, but this does not detract from the one thing that really makes this car stand out - it is basically an open sports car, with folding roof to cover you for all weather driving, for under £20,000.

CONS:  Although the interior feels pretty high quality this car has really been stripped down to the bones in order to bring it in at such a cheap price, meaning few refinements and a scarcity of equipment.

Behind the Wheel

There is no doubting that this car is fun to drive and gives you good performance for its price range. Managing to go from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds, you can take the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupé 1.8i SE up to a top speed of 123mph.

With 126ps power at 6500rpm, the 16 valve, 1798cc engine produces torque of 123lb-ft at 4500rpm, and with excellent, nimble handling and a good quality 5-speed manual gearbox, this car does succeed in giving you an enjoyable sports car driving experience.

Looks & Equipment

With either the rag-top or metal roof this car looks great, both inside and out, giving all the classic appearance of a high performance roadster.

Included in the list price you will get power steering, central locking, climate control, electric windows and door mirrors, alarm and immobiliser. Although you do also get a reasonable stereo system with CD and MP3 connectivity, the car doesn't have Bluetooth connectivity. And although you get driver and passenger airbags, they are not fitted in the front-sides.

Leather seats are a nice addition, but will set you back £720 extra on top of the standard price.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Although the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupé 1.8i SE looks pretty big for a 2-seater, and is spacious enough for the driver and the passenger, it still only has 150-litres of boot space.

But in every way other way this is a pretty practical car to own, well suited to everyday driving and with surprisingly low running costs. Managing to give you 39.8mpg and with CO2 emission of 167g/km this is a relatively clean and efficient car, which fits into the 21H insurance group.

Value for Money

Selling for just £19,990, and with running costs which will not break the bank, the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupé 1.8i SE represents excellent value for money. OK, so if you pay a bit more then you could get something with a bit more luxury and more refinement, but for this price you will be hard pushed to find anything else with the prestige and performance that this car can offer.
