Volkswagen produces some of the most desirable and reliable mass-market cars in the world; however, the company deserves just as much recognition for the quality of its advertising.

In the 1950s, car adverts were crammed with information -- manufacturers reasoned that the more information they put in their adverts, the more likely the public was to buy the car. VW changed all this; they believed that the buyer needed to be persuaded to buy the car rather than bombarded with facts and figures. Thus, modern car advertising was born.

Since then, VW has created some of the most memorable advertisements in automotive history and what follows is a small selection of some of these.

Abbey Road

VW Drums

Wet Camel

Lucky Man

Gut

Lemon VW

Scarf

Electrocute

Googly Eyes

Meathook

Man VW
