Volkswagen has released the first official photographs of the new 2013 Beetle Cabriolet ahead of its launch at the Los Angeles motor show next month.
The new Cabriolet is Volkswagen's third drop-top Beetle, following the original Beetle Convertible of 1949 and the New Beetle Cabriolet of 2002.
Rather than giving the new car a modern folding tin-top, the Beetle Cabriolet comes with a traditional canvas roof which Volkswagen claims "lies very flat, enabling good vision to the rear."
The Cabriolet will also be fitted with an active rollover protection system, which fires two extendable modules behind the rear seats in the event of a rollover crash. This, combined with the car's fixed A-pillars is enough to provide sufficient passenger protection if you find yourself upside down.
Seven engines are on offer in the new Cabrio including four petrols and three diesels. The petrol range includes a 1.2-litre TSI unit, with or without BlueMotion technology, a 1.4-litre TSI and a 2.0-litre TSI with 197bhp. Diesel engines include a 1.6-litre unit with or without BlueMotion technology and a 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI.
Volkswagen has yet to release any pricing details on the new car, but expect prices for the Beetle Cabriolet to start from around £19,000.
