Volkswagen has revealed the first images of the new Mk7 Golf GTD, which goes on sale here in the UK in July following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
The new Golf GTD is the flagship high-performance oil-burner of the Golf range and is the most powerful diesel Golf ever to leave the Wolfsburg factory.
Underneath the bonnet, the new Golf GTD gets a new 2.0-litre four-pot common rail diesel engine, producing 181bhp and 280lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen claims this is enough to propel the car from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 143mph -- 0.6 seconds and 5mph better than the previous model.
But, of course, nobody is going to buy the GTD purely for its performance -- that's what the GTi is for -- so what about fuel economy? Well, VW claims the GTD will return 67.3mpg on the combined cycle and emit just 109g/km of CO2.
As you can see, the GTD comes with a number of accoutrements which mark it out as a high-performance model. You get smoked rear lights, chrome exhausts, 17-inch alloy wheels, a bodykit and a rear spoiler.
On the inside you get a GTD steering wheel, black rooflining, stainless steel pedals and, of course, that essential feature without which no performance-oriented Golf could be without: tartan seats.
UK pricing and specification details will be announced closer to launch.
