Volkswagen is using this weeks Tokyo Motor Show to reveal its latest concept model, the Cross Coupe.

The plug-in hydbrid powered concept is the German manufacturers interpretation of how a crossover between a compact 4x4 and a four-door coupe would look.  With dimensions providing a footprint size between Volkswagen’s Golf and Tiguan, but with a longer wheelbase and short overhangs, the Cross Coupe incorporates coupe looks but with an angle of approach and ground clearance aimed at off-road capabilities.

Stylisically, the front end lines are reminiscent of current Volkswagen models but with new light and grille architecture.  To the rear of the four-seater design are steeply sloping lines, with distinctive light clusters and chunky bumpers.

The Cross Coupe is powered by twin electric motors – one front, one rear – with a range of just under 25 miles.  These motors are supplemented by a turbocharged, direct injection, petrol engine.  The rear axle is driven by the rear electric motor using power supplied by the front via an ‘electric drive shaft’.  The front motor is, in turn, powered by the petrol engine.  This allows room where a conventional drive shaft would be to locate the lithium ion battery, with its low mounted position aiding a low centre of gravity.

The Cross Coupe has an overall 261bhp, with a top speed of 125mph and a 0-62mph time of seven seconds flat.
