When, on 29 March 1974, the first Volkswagen Golf rolled off the production lines at Volkswagen's factory in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen could little have imagined the impact its front-wheel drive hatchback would have.

Since then, more than 30 million examples of the Golf have found homes worldwide, making it the most successful European car ever made. It's also the car which saved Volkswagen from potential financial ruin, sparking off an ascent which would see it become one of the world's foremost carmakers, swallowing up the likes of Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Lamborghini, Bentley and Ducati along the way.

So, we thought we'd take this opportunity to belatedly wish the Golf a happy birthday. So scroll down to see how the Golf has changed over the years, and click here for our detailed history of the development of Europe's best-selling car.
