Vauxhall has set a new world record for the highest average speed achieved on the banking at the Millbrook Proving Ground over 24 hours.
Two 2.0-litre CDTi Vauxhall Astras were used to complete the challenge, using twelve drivers each doing a four-hour stint. Although the data has yet to be ratified by the FIA and the MSA, Vauxhall claims that Astras averaged 125mph, each covering nearly 3,000 miles over the 24 hour period.
Although world records already stand for 1, 6 and 12 hour stints, this is the first time world record attempt for 24 hours. A national record for 24 hours was, however, set at 100.2mph in 1992.
During the test, each car required a change of tyres and no engine oil was used whatsoever -- impressive, given the extreme treatment to which the cars were subjected. The total downtime for each car was just 22 minutes, excluding refuelling and driver changes.
Vauxhall claims that it has attempted to set 18 records with the challenge.
