Vauxhall has released the first images and details of its new Insignia Country Tourer, which is set to go on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The Country Tourer is essentially a chunky, off-road version of the standard Insignia Tourer, which will rival the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad.
The new car will get all-wheel drive and higher ground clearance than the standard Insignia estate and will be offered with a choice of two turbodiesel engines: a 2.0-litre BiTurbo CDTi with 192bhp and 295lb-ft of torque and a lesser 2.0-litre diesel with 163bhp and 280lb-ft of torque.
The less powerful diesel engine is available with a choice of six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, while the BiTurbo is available with the auto 'box only.
The Insignia Country Tourer's 4x4 system utilises an electronic limited-slip differential and can vary torque distribution between the front and rear axles seamlessly. Vauxhall claims that this provides the car with superb traction on both paved and unpaved surfaces. Off-road performance is also helped by the extra ground clearance -- the Country Tourer sits 20mm higher than the standard Tourer -- as well as the car's larger tyres.
Although unmistakeably still an Insignia, the Country Tourer gets a number of styling tweaks which differentiate it from its front-wheel drive brethren. Anthracite coloured protective cladding comes as standard and there are silver-coloured protective panels at both the front and rear of the car.
Vauxhall has also given the car a wider and deeper front grille with a chrome insert. LED daytime-running lights are also included as standard, while at the rear LED taillights and twin chrome tailpipes complete the visual transformation.
Pricing and specification details will be revealed when the Country Tourer makes its debut in Frankfurt in September and the car is expected to go on sale before the end of the year.
