The Vauxhall Cascada is set to get a new flagship 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is due to make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

With 197bhp and 221lb-ft of torque, the new engine is capable of propelling the Cascada to a top speed of 146mph, making the new model both the fastest and the most powerful model in the Cascada range.

The new engine is one of Vauxhall's latest four-cylinder SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) units and joins the range alongside the existing 168bhp 1.6-litre turbo fitted to the Cascada from its launch earlier this year.

This is the second new engine announced by Vauxhall this week, following on from the new 1.0-litre unit which is set to be fitted to the Adam. Vauxhall is currently undergoing a major revamp of its engine range with three new engine families and 13 new engines due to go on sale between now and 2016.

The new Cascada 1.6 SIDI turbo will be available to order from October.
