Vauxhall has unveiled its new 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, which will make its debut in the Vauxhall Adam at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
The engine will come with two power outputs -- 89bhp and 113bhp -- with both delivering 122lb-ft of torque; Vauxhall claims that the new engine generates more low-down pulling power than its 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated units.
Both engines will come with start-stop technology as standard, with the 89bhp model capable of returning a combined 62mpg with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km. Technologies such as direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and a switchable water pump help to contribute to the engine's efficiency, while the unit's all-aluminium construction helps to keep weight down.
Vauxhall has also gone to great efforts to minimise the noise and vibration characteristic of the unbalanced, three-cylinder engine. The cylinder block has been designed especially to reduce engine noise and the fuel rail and injectors are structurally isolated from the cylinder head to minimise the transmission of pulsing.
A balance shaft has also been installed in the sump, counter-rotating the crankshaft by means of a chain drive to offset the vibrations of the engine. Acoustically-optimised covers for the top and front of the engine also help to minimise noise.
The engine will be mated to a brand new six-speed manual gearbox which 37kg is around 30 per cent lighter than the unit it replaces.
The new 1.0-litre engine will go on sale in the Adam in the spring.
