A new survey has revealed that some of Britain’s van drivers have turned their vehicles into mobile bedrooms.
The research, carried out by Direct Line for Business, showed many drivers spend more time in their vans than at home and 11% of them admitted to sleeping in their vehicles for convenience.
Additionally, nearly a third of those surveyed said that they use their van as an office while more than half of drivers take their tea break in their work vehicle. 30% said they read in their vans to relax when not behind the wheel.
5% also admitted to having sex in their vans. Romantic.
Melissa Hunt, Business Manager at Direct Line for Business, commented that the results of the survey were unsurprising considering the nature of the job. She said: “With tradespeople working long hours on the job, it is no wonder they often end up eating, managing paperwork and even sleeping in their vehicles. However, customising their van with the latest gadgets and installing entertainment centres may not only be a distraction and compromise their safety, it is unlikely to be covered if it’s stolen from the van.
“Thieves are no longer targeting the vans of builders and plumbers to steal tools, they are after expensive laptops, tablets and smartphones. With so much high end technology being stored in tradespeople’s vans, it is important that owners have sufficient insurance to protect their belongings.”
