Britain's most expensive registration plate has gone on sale with a price tag of £1 million.
'X1' is being advertised for sale on Regtransfers.co.uk, 99 years after it was first allocated.
'X1' has been described as 'exceptional and historical' and was originally issued by Northumberland County Council in 1903.
Until now, the most expensive reg number ever sold in the UK was 'F1', which was bought by a Bradford-based businessman in 2008.
Other pricey plates have included 'M1' which was sold to Liverpudlian entrepreneur Mike McCoomb in 2006, and 'VIP1' which was bought by Chelsea boss Roman Ambramovich in the same year.
The perfect car for the job: the BMW X1
It is thought that 'X1' once belonged to the chairman of a committee in Tynemouth which campaigned for the abolition of the 4mph national speed limit. The Locomotive Act of 1865 limited cars to just 2mph in town and 4mph in the country, and made it mandatory for a flag-bearer to walk 60 yards in front of the car to warn others of its approach.
So, if you've got a BMW X1 -- or, more likely, the new McLaren X-1 -- this could be the perfect personalised registration for you.
However, if you want 3D lettering on your plate, be warned: it'll cost you an extra £5.00.
