Skoda have celebrated the best-selling Octavia’s 20th birthday.

More than five million Skoda Octavia’s have rolled off the production line since the Mlada Boleslav production line was officially opened by former Czech President Vaclav Havel in September 1996.

Those first production Octavias marked the culmination of a development programme started in 1992, shortly after the Czech brand had become part of the Volkswagen Group. The first generation Octavia saw around 970,000 saloons and 470,000 estates produced, with the second generation proving even more popular selling 1.6 million saloons and 900,000 estates. The current generation has been on sale since November 2012, and is now produced not only in the Czech Republic but also in China, India, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
