It has been all over the news in recent days that many businesses across Sweden are trialling a 6 hour working day, a change that Toyota service centres in Gothenburg pioneered well over a decade ago.

Toyota experienced increases in both profits and efficiency, as well as a reduction in staff turnover. They made the switch on the basis that they suspected a happier, healthier workforce, would be a more productive workforce, and it seems they were right.

“Staff feel better, there is low turnover and it is easier to recruit new people,” Managing Director Martin Banck says. “Everyone is happy. Profits have risen by 25%.” He adds.

But here’s the most interesting bit, as well as a widespread roll out in Sweden it is now being trialled in the UK too. Liverpool based, Agent Marketing, is the first company to announce that they are trialling the 6 hour day over here, moving away from their typical 08:30 - 17:30 day, to a 09:00 - 16:00 day with a compulsory lunch hour.

As a result of this decision Agent Marketing have got their name in hundreds of news articles just like this one, they’re even going to be featured on the BBC’s One Show tomorrow. You can’t argue with that marketing. I’m off to tell the boss.
