MINI have announced that the tiny Rocketman concept car has been given the go ahead for future production.

Inside sources at the Geneva Car Show have announced that the innovative Rocketman concept car has been cleared as viable for production by MINI. With its super lightweight carbon fibre body, cleverly designed double-hinged doors and tiny size, the Rocketman will signal a big step forward for the company.

Although parent company BMW will make some technology available for the Rocketman from their ‘i’ range of electric cars, any platform created for the ‘i’ range of cars would without doubt be too big for the truly pint-sized rocketman. This means that a new, smaller platform will have to be developed, and it is likely that this will be done in partnership with another company to cut costs. PSA Peugeot Citroen already have an established partnership with BMW, and have already contributed to the MINI range with their 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines, so they are by far the most likely candidates.

But if the Rocketman has taken your fancy and you plan on buying one for yourself, I’m afraid you will have to wait. It will not be available in the current line-up, and it will not be until a couple of years after the next-generation MINI hits the showrooms in 2014 that you will be able to get your hands on one.
