Volkswagen will reveal the new Golf GTI Cabriolet at next week's Geneva Motor Show.

The new Golf GTI Cabriolet provides open-air motoring for four, but is still packed with the performance and practicality of the GTI hatchback. The new Cabriolet boasts an electronically powered fabric roof, which can be folded away in just 9.5 seconds, even while travelling at speeds of up to 18mph.

The classic GTI design is retained in the Golf GTI Cabriolet. A honeycomb structure still defines the radiator grille with red edging and the GTI badge, while the front bumper incorporates a deep honeycomb air dam and unique vertical fog lights.  Side sill extensions help give the GTI a wide, well-planted stance, while a bespoke rear diffuser is framed by a chrome tailpipe on either side.

Smoked LED tail lights complete the style of the car. As on the GTI hatchback, 17-inch 'Monza' alloy wheels come as standard.

Beneath the insulated and fully automatic roof are four individual seats covered in the classic tartan, but 'Vienna' leather upholstery is optional.

The GTI multifunction steering wheel, the handbrake and the gear lever gaiter are all wrapped in leather, and are complemented by contrasting red stitching. The pedals are finished in brushed stainless steel and there are black 'Edge' decorative inlays on the doors and fascia. The hood lining and roof pillar trims are finished in black.

The same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the GTI hatchback is under the bonnet of the new Golf GTI Cabriolet. The engine is mated to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or the optional six-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox. The GTI reaches 62mph in 7.3 seconds with either transmission, and top speed is 147mph.

All new Golf GTI Cabriolet models come with automatically deploying rollover protection, front and side head/thorax airbags and a driver's knee airbag as standard. All these features contributed to the car's five-star Euro NCAP rating.
