If you're a die-hard petrolhead -- by which we mean you own a brown anorak mottled with a variety of suspicious-looking stains -- then you're probably already aware that the Bugatti Veyron, the fastest car in the world, is, in fact, a Volkswagen.
Oh yes. Bugatti has been under the Volkswagen umbrella since 1998 and this means that the 257mph 1000bhp Veyron is made by the same company which makes the Polo BlueMotion.
Of course, the car for which the German marque is most famous is the original Beetle, and if you look closely -- very closely -- you'll notice there are a number of similarities between the People's Car and the Veyron.
Both have engines positioned behind the cabin, both send their power to the rear wheels (the Veyron, of course, sends its power to the fronts as well) and, erm, both exploit the explosive properties of petrol as a means of propulsion. See? Peas in a pod.
But I digress. The image above is the work of a designer who goes by the name 'rc82 workchop' and shows what a Bugatti Veyron would have looked like if it had been commissioned in the late 1930s. Or, alternatively, it shows what the VW Beetle would have looked like if Hitler had been a petrolhead. We think it should be called the 'Bugattiwagen Veetle'.
As you can see, the shape is unmistakeably Veyron-esque, while the details -- the headlamps, the wheels, the bonnet and the bumpers -- are all lifted straight from the Beetle.
Whether or not the 'People's Veyron' is a design triumph or a hideous abomination is very much a matter of individual taste but, personally, we think it looks fantastic.
