Subaru are celebrating milestone numbers for two of its most successful technical innovations.
Over 14 million vehicles have now been produced with the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system first introduced by the Japanese manufacturer on its 1972 Subaru Leone estate. The system remains an important part of the current Subaru all-wheel drive line up.
In addition, production of Subaru’s renowned horizontally-opposed Boxer engine has now passed the 15 million unit mark. The 1966 Subaru 1000 was the first to feature the horizontally-opposed, water-cooled, four-cylinder aluminium engine, which has since gone on to feature in the majority of cars produced by the manufacturer. The symmetrically positioned pistons reduce vibration and aid balance, while the design allows for the engine to be mounted lower in the engine bay, lowering the centre of gravity and improving stability and handling.
The all-new Subaru Outback, which goes on UK sale from the start of April, will feature the latest 2.0-litre turbo-diesel Boxer engine, along with the choice of a 2.5-litre naturally- aspirated petrol engine.
