American tuning company Shelby American has turned its attentions to the latest Focus ST, unveiling a new hot hatch based on the ST at the Detroit Motor Show.
Now, Shelby is a name you'd normally find emblazoned across the bootlid of an all-American muscle car, so maybe the Shelby Focus ST is proof that the Yanks have finally realised that you don't need a six-acre land barge with an 8.0-litre V8 and antediluvian rear suspension to have fun on the roads.
Then again, maybe it isn't. Who knows?
Anyway, back to the Focus. Shelby has ditched the car's standard exhaust and fitted a new system co-developed with Borla in its place. Other additions include Ford Racing suspension, drilled brake discs, new wheels and tyres and a host of cosmetic tweaks, both inside and out.
But, surprisingly, Shelby has opted not to boost the Focus's power output, leaving the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with the same 247bhp and 265lb-ft of torque given to it by Ford. An optional 'performance tune' is reportedly planned for later this year, which should see power increase to between 280 and 300bhp.
It's unclear whether you'll be able to buy the Shelby Focus in the UK; however, we do know that when it goes on sale stateside, the package will cost $15,000 (around £9k) in addition to the £22,000 you'll need to fork out for the car itself.
