A Belgian woman went on a 1,800 mile detour across Europe after her car's sat-nav went wrong on a trip to her local railway station.

Sabine Moreau, 67, had intended to drive from her home in Soire-sur-Sambe to Brussels, a distance of 38 miles, to pick her friend up from the railway station.

Unfortunately for Ms Moreau, she took a wrong turn and ended up 900 miles away in Zagreb, Croatia, two days later.

During the course of her travels, Ms Moreau managed to cross five international borders without realising, travelling through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. She failed to realise her mistake despite having to stop for fuel several times and being forced to sleep in a lay-by when she felt tired.

She told a Belgian news website:  "I saw all kinds of traffic signs: First in French, then in German - Cologne, Aachen, Frankfurt. But I didn't ask myself any questions. I was just distracted, so I kept my foot down."

"I didn't really notice anything was wrong until I suddenly arrived in Zagreb and realised that I was no longer in Belgium."

Ms Morbeau's son reported this mother missing during the course of her excursion and Belgian police were preparing to start a full-scale manhunt when she phoned home from Zagreb.

She was then left with no other option than to drive the 900 miles back to her home single-handedly, arriving back there 60 hours after she had first left.
