Rolls-Royce has announced a new special edition version of its Phantom Coupe.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Aviator Edition will be revealed at the Pebble Beach Quail gathering in California this weekend.

Finished in Aviator Grey, the Phantom Aviator gets a contrasting matte-finish bonnet and grille surround. Inside there are matte-black dials and an aviation-grade clock (whatever that is) with blood orange needles. The transmission tunnel is also finished in anodised aluminium which Rolls claims echoes one of the most famous Rolls-Royce powered aeroplanes, the Supermarine S6B.

Only 35 Aviator Edition models will be built and there's an embossed quote inside the glovebox from Rolls-Royce founder and keen aviator Charles Rolls: "The power of flight is as a fresh gift from the Creator, the greatest treasure yet given to man."

Rolls-Royce really seems to be pushing the aeroplane link in the Aviator Edition, which is not a good sign. After all, Saab loved to milk their aeronautical heritage, and we all know what happened to them.

Tenuous links to air travel notwithstanding, you'd have to agree that the Aviator Edition is an absolutely sensational-looking car. There is no word yet on pricing, but expect it to cost significantly more than the standard car's £253,125.
