Renault has used the Paris Motor Show to unveil is new RenaultSport Clio 200 hot hatch.
In keeping with the current trend for downsizing and turbocharging engines, the new RenaultSport Clio is fitted with a 1.6-litre turbo engine rather than the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated unit fitted to the old model.
Power remains unchanged at 200bhp, while torque has been increased from 159lb-ft to 177lb-ft. The smaller engine also results in a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions.
The new RenaultSport is an altogether more sophisticated car than the model it replaces. In a move which will cause outrage amongst serious drivers, Renault has ditched the old car's six-speed manual gearbox in favour of a six-speed flappy-paddle job.
Drivers can also choose from three driving modes -- Normal, Sport and Race -- which alter the throttle response, steering feel and the level of stability control interference. Launch control is also fitted.
An interesting new feature is R-Sound Effect. Essentially, it's a system which simulates the sound of one of Renault's classic engines and plays it back through the speakers as you drive.
On the outside, the RenaultSport gets LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, a new grille and spoiler, and front and rear bumpers inspired by Formula One.
Renault Clio
Renault has also announced the introduction of two new engines to the standard Clio line-up. The new car will be available with a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit which returns 65mph and 99g/km, alongside a new diesel engine with CO2 emissions of 83g/km and a claimed combined figure of 88.2mpg.
