Porsche has unveiled a new four-cylinder version of the Macan at the Beijing Motor Show. The new Macan will be the first four-pot Porsche to go on sale since the 968 in 1992 and will come with the same 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine currently fitted to the Golf GTI.
Tuned to produce 234bhp and 258lb-ft of torque, and although this is some way off the 335bhp and 339lb-ft offered by the 3.0-litre V6-powered Macan S, it's still enough to propel the Macan from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 139mph. By comparison, the Macan S will hit 62mph in 5.4 seconds and tops out at 157mph.
The power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed PDK gearbox and Porsche claims that the new model will return 36.7mpg on the combined cycle -- a 4.2mpg improvement over the Macan S.
Visually, there's little to distinguish the baby Macan from its more powerful stablemates. The bootlid is devoid of badging, unlike the other models in the range; however, the biggest giveaways are the twin trapezoidal tailpipes, which are unique to the model.
Initially, the four-pot Macan will be available in selected Asian markets only, and Porsche has yet to reveal any UK pricing details. Expect prices to start from around £40k when the Macan goes on sale in the UK, most likely next year.
