Porsche is to unveil its new 918 RSR at the Detroit motor show. The RSR combines the design of the 918 Spyder concept with the technology found under the bonnet of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car.
The RSR is fitted with the same direct-injection V8 used in the RS Spyder, tuned to develop 563bhp. In addition to this, two electric motors in the front wheels contribute an extra 102bhp each and the additional power needed to run these motors is generated during braking and stored in an 'optimised flywheel accumulator'. At the push of a button, the driver can release this energy to improve performance - much like the KERS system in F1 - and, with both the engine and the electric motors doing their thing, the 918 RSR will produce 767bhp.
The RSR should also be lightweight - the monocoque is made from a blend of carbon fibre and plastic. You'd have to say that the car looks fantastic as well and it's great to see clever hybrid technology such as this being used to make a car go faster rather than to cut 5g/km off its CO2 emissions.
Porsche has said that it will build the car but there is no information on when it will be made available or how much it will cost.
