The hot version of Peugeot's new 208 will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September.
What's the 208 GTI like?
The new Peugeot 208 GTI will sit lower than the standard car and will feature a revised front grille, modified front and rear bumpers, twin exhausts and sport seats.
The 208 will go up against the big-hitters in stylish small car market, namely the Citroen DS3, the Fiat 500 and the MINI.
How fast is the 208 GTI?
The old 207 GTI was something of a fatso, tipping the scales at around 1300kg. Because of this, its 1.6-litre engine wasn't really powerful enough to heave the car around, and the 207 GTI was a bit of a wet blanket.
Happily, however, the Peugeot 208 GTI has been on Atkins and tips the scales at just over a tonne. It still gets the same engine as before -- a turbocharged 1.6-litre unit -- but it is available in two states of tune: 154bhp and 204bhp. It's the same engine that appears in the MINI but, surprisingly, the MINI is the heavier car. It's also less powerful and while the John Cooper Works models do deliver more oomph, there really is very little in it.
Peugeot is also keen to point out that the 208 GTI will not be a stripped-out bottle-rocket of the type which Renault seems to favour, but a proper hot-hatch which both cossets and excites you in equal measure.
How much is the new 208 GTI?
Short answer: we don't know. There is no word yet on the Peugeot 208 GTI prices, but further details will be revealed closer to launch. We'll keep you posted.
