Yesterday at the Tokyo Motor Show 2015, Nissan unveiled its new IDS autonomous electric concept car.
Nissan has described the IDS as the next step of its plan to launch numerous autonomous vehicles by 2020.
The concept boasts both piloted and manual drive modes, as well as a shape shifting interior that changes depending on which mode is employed. In the self-driving mode, the seats rotate inward - as you can see on one of the photos above - and the steering wheel disappears into the dashboard, giving the driver space to relax and use the large entertainment screen.
Interestingly the IDS claims to offer a personalised experience, even in the piloted mode. When the driver selects Piloted Drive the car's performance – from braking, to accelerating, to cornering – imitates the driver’s own style and adopts their preferences.
It may look like something from a new installment to the Back to the Future series and we may never see anything remotely like it on the roads, but it's an intriguing concept with some features that we could realistically see sooner rather than later. Our favourite of these features is the electronic display which faces outside from the instrument panel, and can flash messages such as “After you” to pedestrians.
