Do you know what the future will smell like?

No, of course you don't; no one does. Because, the last time we checked, humanity hadn't mastered the art of time travel. But, amazingly, Nissan has become the first car manufacturer in the known universe to have achieved the impossible and visit the future. It's just a pity that all they've brought back with them is an air freshener.

Let me explain. Nissan has designed an air freshener whose smell "exemplifies air in an emission-free future." No, they're actually being serious.

The company commissioned Master Perfumer and Aroma Academy scientist Dr George Dodd (we promise we're not making this up) to use his "expert nose" to create a scent which represents a zero-emissions future.

Apparently, Dodd took long walks across the Scottish Highlands to research the smell, finally arriving at a blend of cut green grass, myrtle oil, natural orange and something called the "light as air" molecule.

We're loathed to knock the evocative smell of Nissan until we've actually had a sniff; however, from what we can gather, it sounds like it will just smell of, well, air freshener. And Nissans have been fitted with air fresheners for donkeys' years, as anyone who has been in a minicab will testify.
