Mercedes have revealed pictures of the forthcoming SLS AMG Roadster ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut in September.
Sadly, the gullwings are gone but otherwise, the car is much the same as the Coupe version. 0-60mph happens in fewer than four seconds thanks to 563bhp from the Merc’s 6.2-litre V8 and the car has to be electronically restrained at a heady 197mph.
Normally when a roadster version of an existing coupe is produced, the results are disappointing due to the extra weight added by the manufacturer to strengthen the body shell. Thankfully there are no such criticisms of the SLS. Despite the extra rigidity worked into the car’s structure, the car is only 2kg heavier than the coupe.
The canvas roof can be opened and closed in less than 11 seconds and will work on the move – up to speeds of 31mph.
The SLS will be on the road in the UK early next year.
