Fans of fast Fords will be celebrating the news today that an all-new Focus RS has been confirmed, and will be launched across global markets for the first time.
The last Focus RS was introduced five years ago, but the RS name has a long pedigree in performance car circles and dates back to 1968. 2009 also saw the introduction of Ford’s highly successful EcoBoost engine range, which has powered performance models such as the Fiesta ST and Focus ST. With the announcement of the new Focus RS, Ford aims capitalise on a resurgence in the global performance car market, which has grown by 14 per cent in Europe over those past five years, and by a whopping 70 per cent in the United States over the same period.
The new Focus RS forms part of a larger plan by Ford to produce more performance cars across world markets. To deliver this, a new division, Ford Performance has been created and will be headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Under new Global Ford Performance Director Dave Pericak, the team plans to introduce at least 12 new performance vehicles over the next five years.
“Ford remains committed to innovation through performance,” says Raj Nair, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development. “Through our global Ford Performance team that ties together racing, performance vehicles, and parts, we can more quickly bring to market products and accessories that meet the needs of customers around the world on-road and on the track. To earn the RS badge, the vehicle has to be a no-compromise driver’s car that can deliver exceptional performance on the track when required while providing excellent every day driving.”
Further information on the new Ford Focus RS, including specification, pricing, and launch dates, will be confirmed at a later stage.
