A motorist has been banned from driving after being caught speeding at 130mph with a cup of tea wedged between his knees.
Andrew Howie, 35, was stopped on the A120 near Braintree in Essex after being clocked doing nearly twice the legal speed limit in his mother's car. He was returning home to Tiptree in Essex after dropping his brother off at Stansted Airport on 27 May this year.
Appearing at Colchester Magistrates' Court, Howie told the court that he had bought the cup of tea from a branch of McDonalds but ended up holding it between his legs after finding that the Mercedes E-Class did not have a cup holder.
Howie admitted careless driving and was fined £1,000 and given seven points on his licence, resulting in a six-month ban. He had already been caught twice using his mobile phone at the wheel and once for speeding.
