Mitsubishi has announced that two all-new MiEV Evolution II all-electric prototype racing cars will compete in the fearsome Pikes Peak International Hill Climb next month.
It's not the first time Mitsubishi has entered an electric prototype in the world-famous Hill Climb. The firm entered last year's event with the i-MiEV Evolution, finishing second in the Electric Division.
Mitsubishi claims that its participation in last year's event was crucial to the development of the new Evolution II, bringing "a rich harvest in terms of vehicle speed, acceleration and other on-road data, as well as drive battery consumption, motor temperature and other data and knowhow critical to electric vehicle development."
The new Evolution II is both lighter and more powerful than last year's car thanks to increased use of carbon-fibre and four high-output electric motors. Total power output is 536bhp -- 215bhp more than the original Evolution -- and Mitsubishi has mounted the car's batteries lower in the chassis, lowering the centre of gravity and improving handling.
The Evolution II also comes with Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control four-wheel drive system, along with Active Yaw Control (AYC), which controls the yaw moment to improve high-speed cornering, Active Stability Control (ASC), which automatically controls braking force to one or more wheels to improve stability, and ABS.
One MiEV Evolution II will be driven by two-time Dakar Rally champion Hiroshi Matsuoka, who also drove the original Evolution last year, while the second car will be piloted by Greg Tracy, six-time Pikes Peak motorcycle champion.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will be held from 25 June to 30 June.
