Mercedes-Benz have demonstrated their off-road prowess by completing a challenging coast-to-coast journey.
In what the manufacturer believes is a first, a dozen strong fleet of Mercedes-Benz 4x4’s traversed the Scottish Highlands from east to west coast without once setting wheels on a public road. The mix of GLE, GLS, and G-Class Mercs all remained in their standard UK-specification with road legal mud tyres, save for the removal of the side steps.
The G-Class, with its permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive, low-range gearbox and three fully lockable differentials, has been in service since 1979, and remains hand-assembled at Mercedes-Benz’s Graz production plant in Austria. The GLS, with its quilted leather massage seats, is somewhat less utilitarian, but still boasts a centre differential lock, protective underbody panelling, low-range gearbox, fully manual mode for the automatic transmission, special off-road programming for the ABS, ESP and 4ETS traction control; and an extra three selectable ride heights for its AIRMATIC suspension. The GLE is more commonly seen on the school run than off-road, but equipped with the same off-road package as the GLS it too tackled the 65-mile Highland jaunt with ease.
