McLaren has revealed that its new P1 hypercar has lapped the Nurburgring in less than seven minutes; however, the Woking-based manufacturer has refused to reveal the exact time.
McLaren's reluctance to reveal the exact time is pretty suspicious and suggests that the P1 may have failed to match the 6min 57sec lap time set by one of its closest rivals, the Porsche 918 Spyder, back in September.
The company does claim, however, that the P1 managed to lap the 20.8km ring at an average speed "in excess of 178km/h". If the McLaren lapped the circuit at a precise 178km/h, this would translate into a lap time of 7min 0.6sec.
However, even if the McLaren has failed to beat the Porsche's benchmark, a sub-7min lap is still an unbelievably impressive achievement and means that the P1 has conquered the 150-corner track at an average speed of 111mph.
McLaren's chief test driver Chris Goodwin, who drove the lap, said: "The track is like the rollercoaster from hell. However, the car feels balanced and poised throughout, and inspires you to push on with the levels of grip and all-round ability.
"I have only experienced acceleration like this before in a Formula 1 car."
