The McLaren MP4-12C Spider has been officially unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The 12C Spider is fitted with a retractable hard-top roof which can be lowered or raised in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 19mph. McLaren claims that despite the loss of structural rigidity which is a hallmark of many open-top sports cars, the 12C's carbon-fibre shell is so strong that the Spider is as good to drive as the standard car.

The entire MP4-12C range has been upgraded for the 2013 model year, and McLaren has managed to screw an extra 24bhp from the car's 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8. There have also been changes to the 12C's twin-clutch gearbox, resulting in an improved 0-62mph time of 3.1 seconds.

In fact, both the hard-top and the Spider will crack 100mph in less than 6.1 seconds -- faster than the McLaren F1 hypercar of the 1990s.

The new 12C Spider is available to order now, with prices starting from £195,500.
