McLaren has officially unveiled its new 650S supercar, just hours after the first images of the car appeared online.
The 650S will slot into the McLaren range below the more expensive and more powerful P1 hypercar, but above the 12C on which it is based. Available as either a coupe or as a Spider with a retractable folding hard top roof, McLaren claims the car has been designed to "provide the ultimate in driver engagement on the road and on the race track."
We had already fathomed out the '650' part of the 650S' name stood for the number of metric horse power produced by its 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine; however, McLaren has revealed that the 'S' stands for 'Sport', highlighting the improvements made to the car's handling, transmission and drivability.
Unfortunately, McLaren is waiting until the Geneva Motor Show to announce the car's performance figures; however, it's claimed that a 0-62mph time of just 3.0 seconds and a 0-125mph time of 8.4 seconds are on the cards.
McLaren was clearly inspired by the P1 when designing the 650S, with the new car receiving a very similar front-end treatment to its bigger brother. McLaren claims that the car previews a new "family design language," so expect future McLarens to be given the same look.
The new look is also claimed to improve the car's aerodynamic performance. McLaren claims that while the 650S has the same drag coefficient as the 12C, downforce has been increased by 24 per cent at 150mph thanks to more intelligent use of the air flow.
The new five-spoke lightweight alloy wheels are shod in Pirelli P Zero tyres which were developed alongside the 650S and are said to offer strong performance on the road and track.
As standard, all 650Ss are equipped with McLaren's IRIS sat-nav system with Bluetooth, DAB digital radio, audio streaming and voice control. Options include carbon-fibre racing seats based on those found in the P1, an electric steering column adjustment, a rear parking camera and more carbon-fibre throughout the cabin.
The McLaren 650S will be unveiled on Tuesday 4 March at the Geneva Motor Show.
