The new Mazda MX-5, expected to be unveiled late next year, will be lighter than the current offering, but will boast a stronger and stiffer body.

The aim for the newest incarnation of this Mazda favourite is that it will feel even more agile than its predecessor, but also extremely secure at high speeds. The stiffness is to be achieved by using a more high-strength steel, that will help bring the weight down from 1,050kg to less than 900kg.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV technologies will be central to the new design, focusing on the weight reduction and increased efficiency. The new lower weight allows for a new range of engines, all of a smaller capacity than the engines in the current model, there will be the 1.3 litre SKYACTIV engine and the 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated unit. Currently the MX-5 runs on 1.8 litre, and 2.0 litre, naturally aspirated engines.

The striking Mazda Takeri concept that was debuted in Tokyo at the 2011 Motor Show appears to be the inspiration for the new look MX-5, with its larger, sharper grille and sleek bodywork styling.
