A ceremony at Mazda HQ in Hiroshima has kicked off a year of birthday celebrations for the 100-year old brand.
The 30th of January marks the centenary of industrialist Jujiro Matsuda assuming control of Hiroshima-based cork producer Toyo Cork Kogyo Co Ltd, which he transformed into global automotive brand Mazda.
The company has passed many milestones over the past century, entering the European market over 50 years ago, pioneering the use of rotary engines, becoming the first Japanese brand to win the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race in 1991, creating the best-selling MX-5 two seat roadster, and more recently the world’s first production compression ignition petrol engine.
“As we look ahead to the next 100 years, we will continue to challenge ourselves to create unique products, technologies and experiences that our customers love,” said Mazda’s President and CEO Akira Marumoto at the ceremony in Hiroshima.
