This is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, the latest version of Lambo's baby supercar which the company claims is the fastest Gallardo ever.

Taking its name from Lamborghini's newly created racing division, the latest Gallardo is inspired by the performance capabilities and styling of the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo racing car. It will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Underneath, the Squadra Corse gets the same mid-mounted 562bhp V10 as the racing car, mated to a six-speed robotised e-gear paddleshift gearbox. The power is sent to all four wheels.

As a result of this, the Squadra Corse will go from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and hit 124mph in 10.4 seconds. Flat out you'll be going nearly 200mph.

Thanks to the extensive use of carbon-fibre throughout the Squadra Corse's body, it tips the scales at just 1340kg -- a full 70kg less than the standard LP 560-4 and around the same as the Superleggera.

The Lambo gets a carbon-fibre rear wing taken straight from the racing car which is said to develop three times the downforce as the standard Gallardo. There's also a removable engine cover with a quick release system.

On the inside, the Lambo gets carbon-fibre detailing with smatterings of alcantara along the dashboard and on the seats. Buyers also have the opportunity to specify what Lamborghini calls 'comfort seats'.

There's a choice of four exterior colours -- yellow, red, grey and white -- and all cars get a decal strip along the side flanks in red, white and green -- the colours of the Italian flag.

The Gallardo is getting a bit long in the tooth now, having first graced Lamborghini showrooms way back in 2003, and is due for replacement soon. The Squadra Corse could therefore be one of the final, if not THE final, variant of one of our favourite supercars of all time. Having said this, if Lamborghini follows the example of Pagani, there'll probably be another -- and then another -- version of the Gallardo before Lamborghini finally calls it a day and starts building something else.

So, what do you make of the Squadra Corse? Is it a fitting (potential) swansong for one of the biggest names in the business?
