Over 180 vehicles were seized on Tuesday following a crackdown by the Metropolitan Police Service's Safer Transport Command, including a Lamborghini Aventador.
The unfortunate driver of the rare supercar, which is worth approximately £400,000, was originally stopped because the vehicle had no front licence plate. However, subsequent checks revealed that the man behind the wheel was not the registered owner, nor was he covered by his insurance policy to drive the car. Following this the model was seized for no insurance.
In addition to the large volume of vehicles which were seized, police also made 37 arrests for vehicle related crime. Amongst the offences committed were drink driving and robbery.
Sultan Taylor, the Chief Superintendent of Safer Transport Command, said: "The STC works to keep the travelling public safe and part of our duty includes carrying out operations such as Cubo which help to keep uninsured and dangerous drivers off London's roads.
"The STC has achieved some outstanding results through these operations by seizing a large number of uninsured and unroadworthy vehicles that pose a risk on London's roads."
Since the launch of Operation Cubo, in October 2012, the number of vehicles seized exceeds 11,500. In addition to the vehicle related arrests, the operation has also contributed to prosecuting individuals for offences such as drugs trafficking and money laundering.
Siwan Hayward, Head of TfL's Transport Policing, said: "The successful results gained by the Safer Transport Command through their day of action sends out a clear message that we will not tolerate uninsured drivers on our roads. We will continue to work with our policing partners to push for the toughest penalties on those who disregard the law and pose a serious risk on London's roads."
